Lymphedema is defined as tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid usually drained through the body's lymphatic system. It most commonly affects the arms or legs but can also occur in the chest wall, abdomen, neck, and genitals. Common causes can result from cancer treatments that remove or damage your lymph nodes, although any problem that blocks the drainage of lymph fluid can cause Lymphedema.
While Lymphedema is not curable, it IS manageable. Unfortunately, not many specialize in this field, especially in our community. Dr. Nicole has been working with lymphedema patients since 2010 and has been dual certified in Lymphedema and Wound Care since July 2018. She became an instructor for the Lymphedema and Wound Care Institute in February 2021. Dr. Nicole and her highly trained staff are eager to share their knowledge and skills and are driven to help as many people in their community and the surrounding areas they can reach.
Treatments include compression bandages, lymphatic massage, central decongestion therapy, the use of compression stockings, sequential pneumatic pumping, meticulous skin care, and most importantly, receive treatment, education on prevention and maintenance, and comfort in managing their diagnosis, how to perform self-maintenance, and risk reduction prevention practices.
